It is an isolated set of mountainous region ranging from 1200-1300m and runs through various districts such as Athur Taluk in Salem district, Chengam Taluk in Thiruvannamalai district and Sankarapuram Taluk in Villupuram district for the past 400 years. Along with the natural water, Kalvarayan Hills is also a home to the mountain people or locally known as the Malyalis. These people refer to themselves as Goundars and claim to be direct descendants of the popular Vellalar caste of Chidambaram. Inhabitants of this area work hard and earn their living mainly by means of cultivation and agriculture. This hilly area is famous for cultivating numerous millet varieties as well as paddy crops, pulses, groundnuts, mustard and other varieties of beans.

The entire hill surroundings are maintained beautifully and administered by the government people since 1976. People in Kalvarayan Hills have organized into various exogamous groups called Kilai, Vakuppar and Atappu. Every Atappu comprises of various other smaller sized Patri-lineal exogamous groups known as Vitu further consisting of various small families that give the hill a hospitable environment.
